Datça, Türkiye: a first-hand guide to Palamutbükü, Knidos and a September escape

Datça is one of my favourite places on Türkiye’s Aegean coast for a slower beach holiday. If you are looking for clear water, small guesthouses, quiet evenings and time outdoors, Palamutbükü is a lovely base.

I have spent much of the last three autumns in Datça and Palamutbükü. I first arrived by caravan, later stayed for several months in a rented house, and returned again this September for a 10-day trip with my mother. This guide is based on those visits, not a quick stop or a list copied from other travel sites.

Here, I share where we stayed, why I think September is one of the best times to visit Datça, what to do in Palamutbükü, and whether a boat trip and a visit to Knidos are worth adding to your trip.

Is Datça worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you prefer a quieter alternative to Türkiye’s larger coastal resorts. Datça is best for travellers who enjoy swimming, small-scale accommodation, local food, coastal drives and a slower daily rhythm.

Palamutbükü is a particularly good choice if you want to spend most of your time near the sea. It is not a place for nightlife or a packed sightseeing schedule. It is a place to swim, read, cook simple meals, walk after dinner and watch the stars.

Why visit Datça in September?

September is my favourite month in Datça. The sea is still warm, but the intense heat of July and August has eased. Once schools reopen, the crowds also become noticeably smaller.

For me, this means quieter beaches, less busy restaurants and more space on boat trips. It is still warm enough to swim, but it is easier to spend the whole day outside.

I would choose September over peak summer if you want a more relaxed Datça holiday. By late October, the weather can become cooler and windier, so September is usually the safer option for a beach-focused trip.

Where to stay in Palamutbükü

For this visit, we stayed in a simple seafront guesthouse in a one-bedroom prefabricated house. It was not luxurious, but it was comfortable and had what we needed: a kitchen, a balcony, a double bed, a sofa bed and an extra folding bed.

The garden had bougainvillea, pomegranate and olive trees, and the beach was only about 20 metres away. Having a kitchen also made the trip more affordable and relaxed, as we could cook dinner at home.

There are different accommodation options in Palamutbükü, including small guesthouses, apartments, simple prefabricated homes and a few small hotels. During my September 2026 visit, comparable properties ranged from around ₺3,500 to ₺5,500 per night, depending on the number of guests and the facilities.

Treat this only as a personal reference. Prices change quickly by season, so always check recent guest reviews, social media photos and the property’s current price before booking.

Palamutbükü beach: What to expect

Palamutbükü beach is pebbly rather than sandy, so sea shoes are useful. The water is very clear, and I always bring a mask and snorkel when I visit.

There is a public beach, but you need to bring your own towel, mat, umbrella or sunbed. There are also businesses along the coast where you can eat or rent a sunbed.

The small local markets are useful for daily essentials, although water and bread can sell out quickly during the busiest summer weeks. If you are travelling by car, it is easy to explore nearby bays and drive to Knidos or Datça town.

A simple day in Palamutbükü

The best part of this trip was how little we needed to do. We swam during the day, cooked dinner at home, walked along the beach in the evening and watched the stars at night.

There is very little light pollution in this part of the Datça Peninsula. On a clear night, the stars are bright enough to make you stay outside much longer than you planned.

This is the kind of place I return to when I want to slow down. If your ideal holiday includes a busy list of restaurants, clubs and activities, Palamutbükü may feel too quiet. But if you enjoy a peaceful routine by the sea, it is a beautiful place to spend several days.

Visit Knidos Ancient City for sunset

Knidos Ancient City is one of the best things to do in Datça. It is close enough to visit from Palamutbükü by car, and its position by the sea makes it a memorable sunset spot.

We drove there in the late afternoon, walked around the ruins and stayed for sunset. You can also visit Knidos by boat, but having a car gives you more flexibility.

I would not rush this visit. Give yourself enough time to explore the site before the light changes. It is one of the few places where history and landscape genuinely feel connected.

Take a Palamutbükü boat trip

We joined a five-bay boat trip from Palamutbükü and spent one full day on the water. The trip started at 9:30 a.m. and ended around 5 p.m.

Our route included Madan Island, Knidos Ancient City, Gayrap Bay, İnönü Bay and Çay Limanı. My favourite stop was İnönü Bay because of its caves, clear water and snorkelling opportunities.

We travelled with a small family-run company called Dost Tur. There was no loud music on board, which made the day feel much calmer. Lunch was included; we chose fish, served with pasta and salad.

We paid ₺2,000 per person in September 2026. Prices and routes can change, so confirm both before booking. For me, the boat trip was worth it because it made it easier to reach quieter bays and spend more time snorkelling.

Snorkelling in Palamutbükü

Snorkelling is one of my favourite things to do in Palamutbükü. I have seen small fish, flatfish, pufferfish, lionfish and weever fish here. On this visit, I also saw octopus, squid and starfish near the shore.

There are sea urchins between the rocks, so enter the water carefully. I would avoid touching any sea creature you do not recognise and wear sea shoes around rocky areas.

How many days do you need in Datça?

I think five days is enough to enjoy Palamutbükü, visit Knidos, explore Datça town and join a boat trip. If you can stay longer, 10 days gives you a much slower and more restful experience.

Datça is not a destination I would try to “finish” in two days. It is better when you leave empty time in your plan.

Final thoughts: is Palamutbükü right for you?

Palamutbükü is a good choice for a quiet Datça holiday. It is ideal for couples, friends, solo travellers and families who enjoy swimming, snorkelling, simple guesthouses and slower days.

My mother and I spent 10 peaceful days there, and it was even more enjoyable than we expected. We came home already talking about returning with more family members.

If you are visiting Datça in September, I would choose Palamutbükü for a few nights, make time for Knidos at sunset and leave at least one day free for a boat trip.
