Biesbosch National Park Boat Tour: A Day in Nature in the Netherlands

When people think of the Netherlands, they usually picture canals, bike paths, colorful tulips, and windmills. But the country has many hidden gems, and Biesbosch National Park is one of them. If you want to do something different from the typical tourist activities in the Netherlands and spend a peaceful, fun, and nature-filled day, this park is perfect for you.
Last summer, I spent a full day at Biesbosch with my family, and our boat tour in Biesbosch National Park turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Even though the Netherlands is a small country, its natural areas are incredibly well preserved, offering unique experiences at every corner.
Experiencing the Netherlands: A Day at Biesbosch National Park

Where is Biesbosch National Park?
Biesbosch is one of the largest national parks in the Netherlands, located near Rotterdam and Dordrecht. By car, it’s about 40 minutes from Dordrecht, 1 hour from Rotterdam, and 1.5 hours from Amsterdam. If you prefer cycling, it’s just under an hour from Dordrecht. Location: Biesbosch Location
Situated on a river delta, the park is surrounded by lush reeds, ponds, and canals. For nature lovers, it’s a true paradise. You can even explore parts of it via Google Street View before visiting.

Your Boat Tour Experience in Biesbosch
Spending a day in Biesbosch National Park was truly magical. My sister, two little nephews, my brother-in-law, my husband, and I set out early in the morning for a family-friendly boat tour immersed in nature.
We prepared everything in advance: sandwiches and tea for breakfast, plus a few snacks. We booked our boat online a day before—reservations are very important in the Netherlands.

Upon arriving, we parked in the free parking lot and checked out a small shop-like area nearby. Then, we received our boat, put on life jackets, and got a map showing which points along the canals we could explore and what wildlife we might see.

We spent about four hours boating through the canals. The scenery was breathtaking, and we saw many birds along the way. We took photos, watched the birds, chatted, ate, and drank—truly a full, memorable family day in nature.

The park also has a small café, a playground, and restroom facilities. For those interested, SUP (stand-up paddleboarding) and canoeing are also available.
Other Activities in Biesbosch
If you want to make the most of your day in Biesbosch:
- Rent a canoe: Explore the park’s narrow waterways at your own pace.
- Try SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding): A fun way to enjoy the scenery from the water. Check out my other article about SUP rentals in the Netherlands for more details.
- Hiking and cycling trails: If water activities aren’t your thing, the park’s forested areas are perfect for exploring.
One-Day Activity Plan at Biesbosch
Biesbosch is ideal for a full day of nature activities and picnics. Start with a morning boat tour, take a picnic break with your homemade snacks, and then finish the day with a canoe or SUP adventure.

After finishing your boat tour here, you can head to another unique spot in Dordrecht: Villa Augustus. This place is both a restaurant and a hotel. They grow their own vegetables in the garden for the dishes, and the building itself offers a truly artistic and inspiring atmosphere. Converted from an old water tower, this restaurant promises not just a meal, but an unforgettable experience.
A Paradise for Birdwatchers
Biesbosch is home to many bird species. Bring binoculars, and you might spot herons, ducks, and other water birds along the canals.
